European Manor style

From a collection of favorite villas."A man's home is his castle," the expression goes.

And for many , the ideal home really does resemble a castle with stonework, rounded turrets, and even gated entries. The style is especially popular .

European homes feature multiple roof lines and gables, imparting the look and feel of a castle. The exterior may be stone, brick, stucco, or a combination of several materials.

Lot size is a given for the style consisting of garage buildings seperate from the main building connected by the stylish port de cochere roof line.A private enclave.

Today, however, north americans tend to hold on to a romantic view of castles.

Perhaps that's because of princess fairy tales and the image of the Cinderella Castle at Walt Disney World. All style and virtually no defensibility, its whimsy and charm are infectious.

The Disney castle is said to be inspired by the elaborate Neuschwanstein Castle that Bavaria's 'Crazy' Prince Ludwig II built in the 19th century. Ludwig had a reputation for living in a fantasy world and creating overly elaborate structures.

Building Terms

  • Arches. Entrances are often recessed and framed by arches. Arches are curved constructions which span an opening.

  • Balustrade. A balustrade is a low railing made of stone, wood, metal, glass, or other materials and designed to prevent falls from roofs and other elevated architectural areas.

  • Buttress. Buttresses appear as decorative elements in some Collegiate Gothic buildings. A buttress is an exterior support projecting from the face of a wall and serving either to strengthen it or toresist the thrust created by the load on an arch or a roof.

  • Dormer. A dormer is a window set upright on a sloping roof; sometimes this term refers to the actual roof of such a projected window.

  • Drainage spout. Drainage spouts are often elongated and decorated in Gothic Revival buildings. A decorated water spout projecting from a building is one meaning of the term 'gargoyle'.

  • Fenestration. Window treatment. Gothic style buildings often have elaborate fenestration.

  • Finial. A decoration on the point of a spire, pinnacle, or conical roof.

  • Entrances. Principle entrances in buildings of this style are often recessed and arched.

  • Quoin. Hard stone or brick used, usually decoratively, to reinforce an external corner. Rustic quoins are often used in this style.

  • Windows. Bay windows (windows that project outward) are characteristic of this style
